EN 45545-2 Guide for US Rail Projects: Rubber Component Compliance

Practical guide to EN 45545-2 rubber component compliance for US rail transit projects. Covers HL2/HL3 requirements, doc...

EN 45545-2 is the international standard governing the fire performance of materials and components used in railway vehicles. While it is formally a European standard, its comprehensive and quantitative approach to fire safety assessment has led to widespread adoption in US transit procurement specifications as the benchmark for railway rubber and elastomeric components.

Why EN 45545-2 Matters for US Rail Projects

The traditional US approach to railway material fire safety relied on the ASTM E162 flame spread index and ASTM E662 smoke density test. These tests assess individual properties in isolation and do not reflect real-world fire scenarios. EN 45545-2 addresses this gap by combining heat release, smoke density, and toxicity requirements in a scenario-based framework aligned with actual vehicle fire dynamics.

US transit agencies including BART, WMATA, MTA, CTA, and MBTA have progressively incorporated EN 45545-2 requirements into rolling stock procurement specifications, either as the primary standard or as an equivalent alternative to NFPA 130.

Understanding Hazard Levels

  • HL1: Applies to freight vehicles and other applications where passenger evacuation is straightforward. The least demanding level.
  • HL2: Required for most passenger rail applications including mainline coaches, commuter rail, and light rail. Our standard railway rubber products are certified to HL2.
  • HL3: The most stringent level, required for underground vehicles in tunnels where evacuation time is extended. Available on request for all our railway products.
